Nashville, TN (September 5, 2017) – MSS, Inc., the optical sorter division of CP Group, introduces MetalMiner™, the next generation of induction-based true all-metal detectors. MSS has designed and built induction metal sorters for over 40 years, and this latest iteration was designed specifically to handle auto shredder residue (ASR), electronic scrap, plastic flake and glass cullet applications. One of the most relevant new technical features of the MetalMiner™ is the patent pending MapLine™ algorithm.

“MapLine™ allows users to target specific metal types or objects by amplifying the sensitivity for non-ferrous metals, especially wire, while simultaneously reducing it for ferrous dust,” says Felix Hottenstein, MSS Sales Director. “MetalMiner™ is exceeding our customers’ expectations. We’ve found up to 15% higher recovery rates for Zurik when directly compared to other vendors.

Hottenstein continues, “Additionally, MetalMiner™ reduces cross contamination with ferrous-dust-covered wood, plastics, and foam. This creates a noticeably cleaner product.”

Greg Thibado, MSS Vice President, says, “In addition to the technological advances, we’ve implemented new manufacturing techniques that allow for MetalMiner™ to become even more competitive, especially for the wider units.”

The MetalMiner™ is manufactured up 112″/2800mm wide as either a stand-alone model in a conveyor configuration or it can be integrated as an upgrade to the MSS CIRRUS NIR and L-VIS Color optical sorters. Depending on the application, different induction coil configurations and spacings are available.

For certain small particle applications such as plastic flake or glass cullet, MSS also offers the MetalMiner™ in a slide configuration which provides an even higher sensitivity and sorts ferrous, non-ferrous, and stainless steel down to 1mm in size.

CP Manufacturing celebrates 40 years of excellence in the recycling industry

CP 40th Anni imageCP Manufacturing, headquartered in San Diego, CA is proud to celebrate 40 years of supplying equipment and processing solutions to the recycling industry.

“At CP Manufacturing, we’ve always been driven by the simple goal of providing high-performance recycling machinery that last,” says Bob Davis, second generation and owner of CP Manufacturing. “For 40 years, CP has been a pioneer in the recycling industry, and we will continue to drive the industry forward for the next 40.”

CP Manufacturing, a family-owned business, was born out of the scrap metals industry. CP’s sister company, IMS Recycling, was founded in 1954 by Charles M. Davis who invented the world’s first aluminum can flattener in the early 1970’s. Later, the CP2000 Can Flattener revolutionized the scrap industry and helped pioneer the era of recycling.

After the aluminum can had become a common beverage container, CP Manufacturing was formed in 1977 in response to the growing demand for aluminum flatteners and densifiers. Since then, the company has developed dozens of patents and expanded its equipment and solutions portfolio as recycling and waste handling evolved.

In the 1980’s and 1990’s, CP recognized that the trend was turning toward curbside recycling. As the United States and other countries worked to increase the effectiveness of recycling by making it easier for consumers to participate and more cost effective to implement, CP dedicated their research and development efforts to assist in this effort.

Since 2003, CP Manufacturing has acquired several other top recycling equipment manufacturers and solutions providers, including MSS, Inc., Krause Manufacturing, and Advanced MRF. This family of companies, known as CP Group, was founded to provide one-stop-shop turn-key recycling systems for a variety of recycling and waste diversion operations.

Today, CP is an award-winning, industry-recognized provider of some of the largest and most advanced material recovery facilities in operation. CP has built over 450 MRFs worldwide and continues to invest heavily in R&D and automation technology to stay ahead of the changing material streams. And true to its family roots, the company still offers the original can densor product lines.

“We are and always have been a family-owned and operated company,” says Ashley Davis, third-generation family-owner and Sales and Marketing Director of CP Group. “What sets us apart is that we treat our customers like family. Their success is our success. We’re with them for the long haul.”

CP Group Teams Up with RMG, a Local San Diego MRF Operator

RMG full system

High-tech, High-efficiency 15 TPH Commercial Single Stream Recycling System

SAN DIEGO, CA (January 30, 2017) – Resource Management Group (RMG), a San Diego-based materials management and recycling services provider, recently opened a new material recovery facility (MRF). Designed and installed by CP Group, the recycling system features MSS CIRRUS® optical sorting technology and is designed for both commercial and multi-family single stream processing.

“At RMG, we are very proud to be the first MRF built in the City of San Diego in over 16 years. We look forward to playing a larger role as a solution provider in support of the City’s recycling ordinance and the state of California’s mandated diversion goals,” says Armen Derderian, President and Chief Executive Officer of RMG.

Derderian continues, “Our focus now is to grow our commercial and multi-family single-stream volumes while still achieving high recovery rates. CP’s System Engineers had to deal with a number of challenges, like the diversity of the incoming material streams and significant space limitations. But they delivered. We are pleased with our system and its capabilities.”

The majority of the system input is a blend of commercial and multi-family single stream materials, including OCC, OMP, and plastic film. After loading onto the incline conveyor, the material goes through a manual pre-sort station where any over-size items are removed. The 3-deck CP OCC Screen recovers cardboard, and a CP Glass Breaker Fines Screen removes <2″ fines. The remaining material enters the MSS CIRRUS® optical sorter which is set up in a dual-eject configuration and positively ejects containers and fiber materials. This system is able to achieve a higher than 90% diversion with minimal manual sorting.

“This is a unique system in the way we use optical sorting technology to handle and sort fiber,” says Terry Schneider, President and Chief Executive Officer of CP Group. “Our team at CP Group has enjoyed working so closely with RMG to help them reach their diversion goals. They are a very progressive company.”

The MSS CIRRUS® sensing technology features heavily in the success of the system. It allows the operator to select the different types of materials that should be targeted for ejection.

In standard operation mode for this facility, the CIRRUS® positively identifies and extracts all containers (PET, HDPE, mixed plastics bottles, UBC and tin cans) into the first eject chute, and all mixed paper into the second eject chute, while allowing the residue to fall into the negative pass-through. Because a high percentage of the commercial and multi-family input stream consists of single sheets of paper as well as flexible packaging (plastic film), MSS’s proprietary air-assist system is installed to ensure proper material handling on the high-speed conveyor belt and through the detection and ejection zone.

About RMG:

The Resource Management Group, Inc was founded in 1994, and is a full-service waste and recyclable commodities solution company headquartered in San Diego, California. Focusing on being an environmental conscious company, RMG provides turn-key, nationwide corporate recycling services.
